5 Tips from Designers to Refresh Your Space for Spring

How a Cleaning Professional Prepares for Spring
Spring cleaning isn’t just a tradition; it’s a natural response to the warmer weather and increased sunlight, sparking the desire to air out your home and conduct a thorough clean. Here are three essential cleaning tasks to focus on this season.

Declutter Bathroom Cabinets
While you may have kept up with cleaning floors, sinks, mirrors, and toilets during winter, don’t forget about your cabinets. “Before spring, I discard expired sunscreen, dried-up products, and anything I haven’t used over the winter,” advises Robin Murphy.

Empty the cabinets, wipe them down to remove dust and grime, and discard expired items. Replace them with products you’ll actually use in the warmer months. “This makes it easier to access what I need and creates a calmer, more organized morning routine,” Murphy adds.

Deep Clean Your Windows
Spring is an ideal time for an extensive window cleaning, encompassing both the interior and exterior, as well as the screens. The milder temperatures make this chore more manageable and help prevent streaks since cleaning solutions dry more slowly. Rinse screens with warm, soapy water and allow them to air dry while you tackle the windows.

Refresh Your Linens
With spring’s arrival, it’s time to swap out heavy blankets and flannel sheets for lighter bedding. Murphy suggests giving all your linens a thorough cleaning, reorganizing them, and storing away winter bedding. “I clean not just for hygiene, but to create a pleasant atmosphere,” she explains. “In spring, this means letting go of heavier items, both physically and mentally.”

How a Professional Organizer Prepares for Spring

Embrace the spirit of renewal that spring brings by refreshing your space, resetting routines, and clearing out lingering clutter. Here’s how a professional organizer approaches the season.

Tackle High-Clutter Areas
Identify the areas in your home that have become cluttered, whether it’s a guest closet, kitchen pantry, or garage corner. “Instead of feeling overwhelmed, focus on one section at a time—a closet, drawer, or countertop,” suggests Amy Tzur. “This approach allows for a more detailed and thoughtful sorting process.”

Once you’ve organized one challenging area, use that momentum to continue tackling other spaces.

Evaluate and Store Winter Items
With winter behind you, Tzur recommends assessing your winter gear and sorting items into keep, donate, or discard piles. “Get rid of anything worn out or damaged,” she advises. “Donate items in good condition that you can’t pass on to younger family members.”

Be sure to clean off any salt or snow residue from boots and wash hats, gloves, scarves, and coats before storing them. “No one wants to be unprepared when the first snowfall hits,” she says. “Using airtight bins or sealable bags will keep dust out and preserve items for next season.”

Invest in Organizational Solutions
Enhance your home’s functionality with practical organizational tools like bins, baskets, or closet systems. You might even consider acquiring furniture that enhances organization, such as a slim shoe cabinet or an entryway rack.

“These tools help maintain order and accessibility, while labels simplify upkeep,” Tzur explains. “A small investment in effective storage can significantly contribute to a clutter-free home.”

How an Interior Designer Prepares for Spring

A few strategic design updates can make your living space feel as fresh and vibrant as the season itself. Here are some of a professional decorator’s best strategies for embracing spring energy.

Incorporate Nature Indoors
Spring is the perfect time to bring nature inside. “Each year, I like to refresh my indoor plants, either by repotting or introducing new ones,” shares Gabriela Eisenhart. “Adding wildflowers and lighting a clean-scented candle creates an inviting atmosphere that embodies spring.”

Streamline Your Decor
Take a look around and assess which decorative items enhance your space and which ones might detract from it. “Every spring, I feel compelled to remove anything that no longer contributes positively to my home,” Eisenhart notes. “Decluttering allows me to make room for the changes I desire after a dreary winter.”

Rearrange Your Furniture
A simple furniture rearrangement can give your space a fresh look without spending much. “I enjoy moving furniture, artwork, and accents to satisfy my desire for change as spring approaches,” Eisenhart shares.

She also suggests refreshing textiles with lighter fabrics as warmer weather approaches. “Swapping out bedding, throws, and accent pillows for airy linens and cottons prepares your home for the seasons ahead.”
